A Makeup Artist’s Perspective on Beauty

Why is my nose so big? I don’t like the color of my eyes. I hate my acne scars. I look disgusting. I wish I looked younger.
In today’s society women set such a high and unattainable level for the standard of beauty that they hold them-selves up to. These images of flawless, airbrushed, and photo shopped celebrities and models led other women to self-confidence issues.
Eva DeVirgilis had an amazing and powerful video on Ted Talk that had gone viral on the web discussing her experience as a make up artist and the degrading words women from different backgrounds, ages and races, would say about their features when sitting in her chair. What stood out most was that these women who sat in her chair all apologized for their looks! I don’t know about you but sadly.. I too have apologized for the way I look.
“I’m sorry my nose is weirdly shaped. I wish my skin was more evenly toned. I wish I had longer eyelashes. I wish I looked tanner. I hate being so white.” These are some of the things I have apologized for when sitting in a make up artist’s chair.
So why do we apologize for our facial features that make us all look individually unique and different from one another? What will it take for us to appreciate what we have? Cancer? Illness? Death?
In this Ted Talk, Eva addresses these prospective issues of what it may take for us to appreciate what we have. Seeing these issues and moving forward Eva uses her passion for make up and uses her passion to help women look and feel their best. Eva focuses on bringing makeup artistry and acting together by documenting the diverse stories of the women who sit in her makeup chair and then bringing them to life on stage. Eva’s mission: “is to convince every woman in the world to stop apologizing for the way she looks!”
What inspired me to write this blog post was when I came across pictures of Eva DeVirgilis speaking at the 2014 Convention in Dallas that were posted on Younique Corporate’s Facebook page. Unfortunately I was unable to go to Younique’s convention this year. But I was so ecstatic when I saw these pictures of her on Younique’s page! Younique’s mission is to uplift, empower, validate, and ultimately build self-esteem in women around the world through high-quality products that encourage both inner and outer beauty and spiritual enlightenment while also providing opportunities for personal growth and financial reward. Eva DeVirgillis is a perfect, genuine, inspiring and empowering example of what Younique stands behind; and a perfect speaker chosen for the Younique Convention to inspire and empower other women through her message of beauty, make up, and confidence to feel confident with or without make up.
So if using tools like mascara, eyeliner, eye shadow pigments, lip liners, lip-gloss, lip stains, BB Cream, foundation, bronzer or blush to magnify the beauty that already exists, make people feel good, and bring confidence… then why the heck not! You can’t put a price stamp on that!
